Blog Tour – The Best People by Marc Grossberg

The Best People by Marc Grossberg, his debut novel that was released in October 2019 and another amazing book being brought to you by Suzy Approved Book Tours.

“Think a super-sized, red-haired My Cousin Vinny meets The Bonfire of the Vanities in Houston, where you can’t always tell who the best people are.”

In a stunning debut novel, Marc Grossberg portrays post-millennium Houston as it is, a glitzy place full of larger-than-life characters where anyone can make it. It is the landscape where the country-club and café-society sets clash amidst clever legal maneuvering, big law firm politics, a Ponzi scheme and judicial corruption. Only someone with the experience of being a lifelong Houstonian and a veteran of fifty years of practicing law could have pulled it off.

About the book:

A Tale of Trials and Errors is a legal drama and social satire set in Houston which offers a glimpse into a world in which you can’t always tell who the best people are.

Patrick “Paddy” Moran, age 36, fresh from being sworn into the Texas bar, begins a wild and rocky journey fueled by his fierce desire for recognition and respect. In a county where some 40,000 civil cases are filed every year, Paddy is sure he’ll get his share of the good ones, sooner or later. After sputtering through mindless uncontested cop divorces and a spate of questionable cases of cops getting rear-ended by luxury cars—and surviving one near career wreck—his luck changes. Paddy Moran’s first victory—a $500,000 settlement from a hospital—comes with a sweet bonus: the genuine friendship of his well-connected, classy dame client. Dressed for success and driving a Mercedes, Paddy finally begins to stand out for more than his imposing physical size, red hair, and New York moxie. He’s become one of Houston’s celebrated Best People. After a second big win—against one of Houston’s biggest law firms—Paddy gets another valuable asset: a young law partner, Will Marshall, a life-long Houstonian with social cred who’s just as hungry to succeed as Paddy. Dubbed the “M&M boys” by Texas Monthly, Moran and Marshall keep attracting media attention and rich clients in juicy divorce cases.

And Paddy’s still a good guy, but visions of winning a high-profile trial with a huge fee lure him into making a very bad judgment call. Then, one dirty deed leads to another…

The Best People is also the story of Pilar Galt, a sensuous, intelligent single mother from the Houston barrios, for whom a temp assignment evolves into a relationship with the richest man in town. Her path intersects with Paddy’s and eventually converges during a pivotal time in her life when she must overcome self-destructive tendencies to survive.

What follows is a cautionary tale for anyone who thinks power, money, and a winning outcome justifies unethical means.

Marc Grossberg has the experience and the smarts to make Houston come alive on the page. The Best People will even take lifelong Houstonians to places they’ve never been. As they say in Houston, if it ain’t true, it oughta be.”   —Mimi Swartz, executive editor of Texas Monthly, tw0-time National Magazine Award winner, author of Ticker, New York Times contributing op-ed writer

“Not in many years has Houston been so vivid a character in a novel about third-coast justice. The high stakes conflict of money and power are anything but a backdrop…through the steamy bayous, bedrooms, and courtrooms of the biggest small town in Texas.”  —Kim Ogg, Harris County District Attorney

“I fell in love with Paddy as he was transformed from a rough and ready New York cop into a suave Houston socialite and followed him though his triumphs and tribulations. Pilar is another memorable character who’s beauty and strength are marvelously portrayed. The Best People is a fast-paced, well-written story and I could not put the book down.”  —Bapsi Sidhwa author of best selling novels including Cracking India (also published as Ice Candy Man and made into the acclaimed film “Earth”)

“It’s a real lawyer story. A real Houston story. A really great story well told. Grossberg nailed it!”  —Stephen D. Susman founding partner of Susman Godfrey and internationally known trial lawyer

My review

I used to be a huge fan of legal thrillers, read them all the time. As a matter of fact there was a time when I couldn’t get enough of John Grisham and Scott Turow and I would devour their books in a day. For some reason or another (I really am not sure) I haven’t picked one up in a while, so when I had the opportunity to read Marc Grossberg’s debut novel, The Best People, of course I was going to get on board.

Hometown Brooklyn cop turned lawyer Paddy, now trying to make it big in Houston is our irritatingly likable hero. Pillar the abused divorcée now finally moving up in the world, is the woman we all want to admire. But when greed is the ultimate motivator, it it really worth it in the end?

Marc’s book has everything a legal thriller should have, ambition, greed, divorce, revenge, wealth, power and ethical dilemmas. It’s jam packed with realism about wanting to make it to the top and the risks and chances that we are willing to take in order to get there. Ethics and corruptive behavior be damned! But the best part that makes Marc Grossberg’s book stand out among the rest is the twist of social satire and witticism. He takes us into the ‘behind the scenes’ world of the legal system with such insight and such an entertaining way, that you find yourself chuckling at the sheer honesty of it all.  Plus we all know I love a little snark in my books, so this one really hit the ball out of the park right there alone.

This one has wit and charm, was well written and kept my attention. Oh and snark, did I mention satire/snark? You will be engrossed in the story and entertained by the insight. Gotta give this one 4 stars. Marc Grossberg you’ve got me back into my legal dramas. I still have no idea why I strayed, but thanks for bringing me back.

I just would like to thank Marc Grossberg,  Suzanne Leopold of Suzy Approved Book Tours and Greenleaf Book Group Press (#partner) for the gifted copy of this book for my unbiased and honest opinion for review.
